Oregon Road Trip - Day #2 (and #3)

Last time we left you, it was midnight-ish on Thursday Night...
... Trevor was typing and on his way to his "Haida bed"!!
... Kate and Ella were discussing wake-up times
... and somewhere in the universe at the headquarters for thermodynamic balance and fair fate equity, officers Yin and Yang were asleep on the job...

We arose the next morning, got ourselves together, and had a quick breakfast at the hotel, starbucks across the street*(1) and found our way to OSU campus, Kate at the wheel, and navagator extraordinaire Ella at her side.

As we finished parking in the unfinished (thunderbird sized) parkade, we met up with the two delegates from Lewis & Clark, and walked together to the Memorial Union Building. There, we were greeting by gracious and cordial hosts and registration team. Two books, $7 meal card, and a couple cute Beavers paraphernalia.

After catered cookies and tea, we sat near the front and made small talk with a couple nearby sitters. Kate actually met her sister's hall director from Univ. of Portland: Katie Dewilde. It was then, that our host host David took the time to recognise certain people in the crowd.
Although we did NOT receive the honour of "Furthest Away" we DID get recognised for being the three who made the (oregon designed) conference "truly an international affair". Hehe. We got OSU UHDS tshirts.

Our first workshop was on Ethics.
"Professional Eithics and Ethical Leadership" presented by Larry Roper, Vice Provost Student Affairs.
Great material, discussion, and relevent subject matter for a room filled with new professionals.
Larry was a great facilitator and obviously very experienced in student affairs. The greatest thing I probably took away from Larry was "they hire you because you have values... they Don't hire you to apply your values. They hire you to apply Thiers!"

Next we actually did a workshop on Networking (not quite the same as yours, Jo, but awesome still - considering the target audience was about 8 years older on average.)
"Networking in Student Affairs" presented by Dr. *(2) Jackie Balzer, Dean of Student Life.
It was great to consider all the ways in which we can use our connexions to develop ourselves, support our staff, and serve our students. And also how to expand our careers. In the end, I think what I took away from it the most would be "Student Affairs community is small... and we are all great people" Too true, Jackie, TOO true. As we would soon discover, this workshop would prove to be the MOST relevant on our trip :).

Lunch was great fun. Went to their Marketplace West (like our pacific spirit at the SUB). Mexican Cuisine was our outlet of choice. And icecream to follow for myself. It was great to talk to others about thier programme, student engagement/involvement (eg. athletics and rec, rha, etc). Also to get an appreciation for the different systems, and values.

Our last workshop of the day was focused on academic success.
"Learning Rediscovered" presented by Tom Scheuermann, Director UHDS.
Although an absolutely thorough analysis of a text used in the field, having not read it (i.e. most everybody in the room) it was a little hard to follow along. Advanced Stuff! Yet, I am confident that we all learned (lol) a lot notwithstanding. It will be huge beneficial to go back over the material in the coming weeks to review it, and maybe design possible applications.

At the end of the conference, the hosts shared with us the NWACUHO website, and all the resources available to us all as members. I will be browsing in the very near future.
At that point, the OSU folks made a point to invite us out for dinner and karaoke for the evening, which we gladly accepted, requesting only that we had a few hours of downtime first.
Josh then was kind enough to offer us a campus tour when I asked if we were able to see a residence hall. We walked around quite a bit, and I have lots of photos which I will post on Flickr presently. We also got to see the administration building, and their "prc"-like area. RHA offices, study lounges, etc.
Then we hit up the bookstore. You'll see what that was like soon enough I am sure... depending on who you are reading this. LOADS of Beavers merchandise, and colours wear for the many football fans.*(3)
2- Corvallis, OSU (17)
2- Corvallis, OSU (21)

Back at the Hotel, we used our hour long "nap time" mostly to debrief amongst ourselves, share reflection, and theorise a little bit about our own programme at UBC. Some things brought up: Prof office hours in commons? Applying for grad schools. Relationships and implicit/explicit expectations on staff. FNPP's re: alcohol, re: age, re: sports events... and much more I am sure.

Off to McGrath's Seafood Restaurant for dinner. Lots of fun. Did I mention how great the local oregonian micro-brews are? Well: quite good. That's right Canada, americans CAN brew good beer.
Great conversations and all that jazz over dinner. Makes you shake your head and think: these people just met each other this morning. Granted, many were OSU, but also there were us 3 UBCers, and 4 or so WSUers, etc.
3- Corvallis, Dinner & Karaoke (1)

After dinner, we were off to a local tavern for karaoke night. GREAT TIMES.
UBC Represented well at the mic: Summer of 69, Ella sang Burning Ring of Fire with Dave, Trevor did solo NY, NY by Frank, and also Sweet Caroline plus others with some partners. Kate and Willy stole the show with Kate's tear-jerking rendition of {{some cheezy love song, kate, let me know and i will fix this text}} and willy's interpretive dance.
Becky claimed to be an expert at Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, but alas! that particular hit song was not available in the system, and so there was no getting her up to the mic.
3- Corvallis, Dinner & Karaoke (9)

Suffice to say, the whole day was flawless and the most fun we could have EVER hoped for.
Ever hoped for.
Ever.*(4)

---
The drive home was also very nice.
We got a little bit of a late start leaving Corvallis, but we made excellent time on the i5.
At Portland, we met up with Kate's sister Karen and checked out her rez on campus. Karen then lead us downtown Portland where we walked the streets a little and then had lunch. It was a great visit and tour.
4- Portland (4)

We all took turns napping on the way home, quite effectively in fact.
Seattle Skyline from the South looks even cooler.
There was pretty much no line at the border, and the guard was really good: no trouble with id, the car, me driving, no declarations, etc. Just smooth sailin' all around.
We took King George through Surrey and then we crossed the Port Mann.
Got Ella home for Thanksgiving dinner in Port Moody only -- what would you say, Ella? -- 45min behind schedule. Again, like I said before, we made great time on the roads.
PS> I love Kate's car, and I really like that Interstate 5. 85mph feels like 85km/h on those wide smooth roads.

Anyways, I have probably given short shrift to the return jouney, but I will reemphasise once again: it was a perfect trip, from beginning to end. Everything was awesome.

And now we're just really looking forward to discussing/sharing with the larger RLM/C group this week when we get a chance.

Thank-you Corvallis, OSU, Oregon State, and all the people we met and got to know.
Keeping in touch is an important part of networking. In fact, I would argue it is the crutch to good networking.

We (L) NWACUHO.

Cheers,
~Trev~ (on behalf of Ella & Kate, too)

NOTES:
(1) At starbucks, when paying for my chai, I made certain point to say out loud, "3.20, so that will be 4 one-dollar bills" and then proceeded to hand the girl 3 ones and a 10. Gosh darn yankee money, it all looks the same, even when you are putting in a concerted effort to differentiate. I like the new bills that Kate was showing us... or as she puts it: "we're slowly turning [our money into] Canadian"

(2) Apparently, Jackie had recieved her title as "dr" only hours before she arrived to present. Neat eh? we were the first group to hear her speak as such.

(3) We were missing the next day (saturday)'s Homecoming Game between the Beavers and the Cougars.

(4) Mr Yin and Yang, please be merciful on us in the coming weeks. It was not our choice to be have only positive everythings. Certainly a little shift in equilibrium in the universe can be accomodated!

Oregon Road Trip - day #1

Here we are in beautiful Corvallis, Oregon.
Kate and Ella and myself.

We left UBC at 9am this morning - myself having not slept yet on account of having written an essay, and ripping apart my room looking for my passport (but to no avail.)

Peace Arch border gave me no troubles, so southward bound we continued - Kate in the drivers seat, Ella passenger, and myself sprawled out in the back.
After reaching Seatle, I came to and got some camera action out the window.
We three spent the next hour on the way into Tacoma in heated discussion involving rezlife, university affairs, politics and probably some branch of philosophy.

We stopped in Tacoma (which for the record is an absolutely CHARMING little town - reminds me a lot of New West) for lunch, and then I took over the wheel as we continued down I-5.
Kate and Ella slept while i cranked the throttle up to 80mph until we had to gas up in Katama. From there, it was another hour until the Columbia River, Portland, and our entrance into the State whose name graces the title of the state university we were en route to attend.

About an hour later (6pm-ish), we reached our destination at the Salbasgeon Suites in downtown Corvallis.

Nice digs for a two night trip! Girls on the huge bed, me on the couch (or rather, whatever you call those couches which pull out into a bed.)
Free internet (hence the emails and this blog) and microwave, television, etc.
*only critique so far: I walk into the lobby with my empty plastic bottle, kindly ask the gent at the desk if he had ¨a recycling bin handy¨ He proceeded to kindly accept my bottle and deposit it directly into a general garbage recepticle. I didnt appreciate the grin on his face...)

After a quick freshening up session - we went off to Clodflipper pub or something like that. Met with Ellaƛ old UBC Student Recruitment colleague Erin who is here doing Masters Student Affairs.
Erin brought two of her colleagues along, and the whole dinner was an absolutely invaluable conversation about life and study in student affairs. Quite good. (as was their two local microbrews I took the opportunity to sample).

Back at the hotel here, girls are wrapped up in GREYÚ ANATOMY - so here i am on the internet.
Looking forward to the NWACUHO conference tomorrow morning at OSU. More to come, stay tuned...

~Jazzy_T~

P.S. photos will be available on flickr after we get home saturday night.

Facebook Suggestion

This morning when I awoke and - yup - checked my facebook, the homepage had an interested NEW comment again. Asking for feedback before they make big changes...
This is what I had to say...

When I got on facebook, I liked it because it was UBC-specific! (my university). It served as a mechanism for community building and student networking on our campus.
I very soon went to a student leadership conference on the other side of the continent, and discovered that facebook -- universally popular -- was also a great tool for networking and keeping in touch between schools.
Later however, I was opposed to the idea of high school, work and regional networks at first because it seemed to take away from the exclusively student nature of the site. Admittedly, these changes never affected me or my facebook experience.
However, in opening up facebook to anybody, I feel the concern lies in it becoming far too accessible to just anybody to use, and therefore a) sacrifices the integrity of its design (i.e. Student-focussed); and b) provides a venue for too many of the wrong sort of users to gain access to information (i.e. "creeps").
In the long run, I believe that those of us who were in our undergrad during the populising of facebook may not feel much affect, as we will continue to USE facebook as we always have, and enjoy... BUT! the up-and-coming university students, will have been pre-conditioned and facebook-savvy ahead of time, may not appreciate its value as a university community networking agent when they arrive on campus, and ultimately the sense of belonging -- or to quote Schlossberg’s Student Development Theory, "Mattering" -- in a special and specific collective of similar people (i.e. university students) will be lost. As a result, campus user bases will decrease on account of people like myself not seeing facebook any differently than myspace, etc (which new university students seeking anonymity and autonomy on campus would heed away from) and in fact, as high-schoolers with friends on those networks reach university, this phenomenon has already begun being noticed.
In the end, what we may find are "students for students" types -- perhaps not unlike a younger Mark Zuckerberg -- writing their own software to create a new site which WILL be dedicated to students exclusively. And who knows - they may figure out how to steal all the data they want from their facebook accounts, and get others on board in doing the same.
I sincerely hope none of these concerns come to pass.
In the meantime, please continue to solicit feedback as you have been, and I challenge you to take baby steps in all the changes you make (I think it will go over a lot better).

Cheers and good-luck,
Trevor Barry

UBC, Take 6 -- Advisor Camp, orientation, opening weekend, and First Week!!!!!!

Hey advid readers (yeah... riiiiight)

So, its «Jazzy_T» here with another update...

... Let's start with Advisor Orientation...

First off, i loved Boo*T last year... you folks helped me so much: to develop my love for student service work, to call me on my BS, and to teach me (or at least help me identify my strengths and weeknesses)... Omid and Andrew Haas, hope marine treat(ed/ing) you well... Vicki, rits and now BOO are NOT far away ;)... Db, rc training was awesome, enjoy the helicoptor, ask bonesy... Wes, summer was great, this year: yet better. :) Ash, Christal and Julie... its not that far to say hello, ANY of you... and Hoy_boy, andrew, you're my main man.... thus....*

*... but my TEAM TWEEEEEEED-SL... is the duck's bill! i mean, wowsers!

I love my team, and we had such a great time at camp and since then.

For photos from camp and orientation visit http://www.flickr.com/photos/jazzy_t/ !

So, highlights from Advisor Camp:
- leading reflection facilitations.
- playing cribbage with Mica P.
- Jumping off the 60 foot cliff into the water with Lesley, Oz, ChrisD, Jeff, GregM (to name a few)
- Leading experiental learning with kate & catherine.
- the COFFEE HOUSE with Scotty^G,... W333rrd! yo!

Additional Rezlife Orientation Hightlights:
- PreBanquet at Rose Garden... Jovid the photographers, +TweedSL sexy
- Banquet at Sage, + Rob Kim and classsy cars on the table, not to mention fingers and thumbs*;).
- Mock Day. :D

* Opening Day *
... was seamless, smooth and awesome this year.. thanks widget!
Met lots of SL and Tweeds,,, love my community!

Opening weekend, same awesomeness... meetings and socials, and movers, and new peeps.
I love my council prez's and returner residents!

Honestly, I am so stoked about this year.

FIRST WEEK (SUS, AMS, Frats*)

- SUS: volunteering back with the science undergrad society again... lovin' it. Where my on campus leadership started, and hopefully where it will continue again. Mike Duncan is a fantastic, energetic and charismatic leader/president.
- AMS: first off, IMAGINE!-- congrats to Robyn and the rest at VPS and student dev for an incredible imagine pep rally (i got to volunteer as an usher) ... new UBC prez/vicechanc Prof Stephen Toope's speach was great, as was AMS prez kevin keystone. Faculty rivalry was classy (thanx commerce) and great fun.
- AMS though!: the improv's and bbqs were amazing, jazz band on SUBcrawl, good times.
Loved the WWBBQ, and Shine is tomorrow: bright and early :)

Frats*... yes yes yes yes yes YES - i know what you are thinking.
and hey - dont get me wrong, i still stand by my last 4 years' worth of opinion... for first year students - living on campus (as all SHOULD but unfortunately cannot) - it is a bit of a waste of time and money... there is SOOO much more and better things available and accesable to contribute to, develop from, and be involved in...
BUT! alas! as one who has been around those blocks... it is a thought: although perhaps only a passing fancy (while the free burgers and beer are still available ;)

I have attended ΔKE BBQ, AΔΩ Beer Garden, ΒΘΠ Fiesta, Figi House ΩΔG, and met/talked with a guy from the obscure ΩU (phi upsilon)
As long as there are events to enjoy - this year, for something new - I will discover and attend :)

Honestly, what it will probably come down to, is a lack of funds or desire to "pay for friends" as they say - as I am already stocked with an amazing bunch here at UBC already... and the select true few off campus who always keep it real, and i love them too...

Anyways, that about gets you allz up to the date... and perhaps i will add a few photos above or below this from my flickr (cited above)
cheers,

~Trev~

Ucluelet Fishing Trip 2006

Hi folks.

So I am back from the fishing trip.
It was great.
The details are a little different than originally suggested, so let me start by passing those on...

We stayed at the Canadian Princess resort in Ucluelet, BC (West Coast Vancouver Island, south of Tofino and Long Beach) for 2 nights.
We flew out from YVR south terminal, and arrived in our rooms in less than 2 hours.
I was with my dad and two mechanics from his company (Westside Auto Repairs, Maple Ridge). The trip was for preffered customers (shop owners, etc) of T&T Auto Parts. There were about 40 of us I would say, divided each day onto 4 different boats.

Friday night, we all bought into a Texas Hold'em Poker Tourney for $20 each, and I managed to make the final table (took out ~4 people, and outlasted another 20 or so).
I came in short stacked at the last table, but still managed to take 2nd prize: $125.

Next morning, 4am, woke up for fishing.
Had too much for breakfast, as I was about to figure out shortly thereafter...

We ferried out for 2 hours due west to a great "hali-hole" (open ocean).
I made the ride out just fine, but spent the next 4 hours from 7-11am "chumming" over the side of the boat and taking it easy in the lunchroom, developing my "sea legs"
But, not one to be conquered, I found my way out to a rod and reel by noon, and fished until 3pm. I must have brought up about 10 dogfish (ugly little sharks that you throw back) until i finally landed my first real catch: a 15-pound ling cod.
That was my only trophy for the day. We were bottom fishing for "hali's and links" for most of the day about 250 feet down, and then spent the last part of the day just 30 feet below the surface hoping for salmon, but to no avail. Apparently this season has been poor for salmon due to an algae bloom which has choked them out.
Yet, collectively, the boat caught its limit in halibut and cod. Even netted the odd sole and snapper.

Next morning, I took it easy at breakfast, and made it the rest of the trip with no sea-sickness. Fished all day til we went back at 1pm, but all I brought in was one 20-pound Halibut. Good catch though. And I had one huge figher later on, but it broke my line and got away.

But the highlight of the trip was probably on the way out on Sunday morning, about 30 miles off shore, we all got a surprise when a [what I would say] 40-foot Humpback Whale came to the surface -- about 50 feet off the port side -- and let out a puff of mist from its blowhole. Its tale must have been 15 feet across when it dove back down. Unfortunately, we didn't get another site of him for about two minutes, at which point our cameras couldn't pick him up about a half-mile behind us.

So... all-in-all it was a fantastic little get-away: got to spend some quality time with my dad; actually went home with enough fish to last me a few weeks, and more money in my pocket (even after beer and souvenirs) than when I left!

I definintely want to find a way to go again next year!

Thanks for reading.
BBQ feast coming soon, as promised.
I have never bbq'd cod/hali before, should be a delight!

~ Trevor ~

RC Training and Halibut Fishing with my Dad

Hey Folks.
Mid-August update.

First off, RC training this year has been outstanding. I love my colleagues, and I am super pumpt for what has already previewed itself as an outstanding TweedSL advising team!
But- more comments to come on this whole experience.

FISHING WITH CYRIL BARRY.
I will need to do a more detailed account when i get home; but for the time being...

... My Dad is finally taking me along on his annual fishing trip. Being the outstanding professional in his field that he is, him and other similar big whigs in the automotive profession from around Vancouver go out onto a boat that heads out somewhere 50 miles west of Port Hardy or some other outpost on vancouver island. We stay on a boat for 3 days hovering over the spot where the Continental shelf breaks down towards the abyss of the northern pacific ocean. Out at sea, we drink and fancy ourselves as big-shot Halibut fisherman. I cannot wait to go.
Having said that, I have one hour to get to the airport, so I had better wrap up this blog.

There will be a feast upon my return... Have a great weekend everybody.

Trevor.

Poolside BBQ - Mon 7 August @1pm, Maple Ridge

TREVOR's ANNUAL AUGUST INVITE
(Pool BBQ Party)!

(headings and graphics completely ripped off the last five years' invitations).

Greetings

Allow me to extend this invitation to cordially request your attendances to my

Good-bye Get-together

Farewell Festivity Fling

Bon Voyage Bash

Sayonara Squantum

Adieu Assembly

Cio Contesseration

Cheerio-Jamboree

In any event...

Monday the 7th of August 2006 [BC Day, long weekend monday], I would be delighted to have you -- my very close friends -- gift me with your company for an afternoon preceding our destined departures back to school, work, bed, et cetera.

The pool side BBQ party will be held at the residence of my grandparents:

Bill & Diane Barry

11696 - 218th Street

Maple Ridge, British Columbia

The show starts around 1 o'clock with lunch, so as to get as much pool-time as possible.
Food, drinks, and entertainment will be provided -- Towels, lotion, and suits will not; Remember to bring these things.

If you wish to bring some things to add, go right ahead -- photo albums perhaps?

Be considerate as to the nature of this event: You're welcome to be merry, but nobody wants to dive in and pull Mary out of the deep-end because she has become saturated with non-polar covalent solvents while swimming in an aqueous environment. (I'm a chemist!)
Drink Responsibly. No Under Aged Drinking.

If you plan on coming, please let me know so I can plan appropriately -- my contact numbers are listed below. [RSVP to Trevor at 604.328.3170 or Jazzy_T@hotmail.com

Come for as long or as little as you feel like, no worries eh.

PARKING!!! The only problem which I foresee is Parking.
- My grandparents live on a dead end street -- there isn't much space on the street nor in the driveway... What I suggest is that you carpool as tight as you can, and park in the back of the Panago Strip Mall (this is the mall on the corner of Lougheed Highway and 218th St.)
- To assist you with this very realistic problem (I'm sorry), I have appended maps and directions to this document.

Please reply back soon,
RSVP ASAP.

Yours Truly,
~ Trevor A. Barry ~

Static Microphone: That's all for this edition [cue scary music] but tune in next time for another version of... «Jazzy_T» [fade out]...

Attached: Timetable, Map, Directions

Basically, after you've passed the Maple Ridge Baptist Church on 220th heading West on the Lougheed Hwy (Tommys is on your right when you are waiting at the light), look out ahead for the PANAGO Pizza mall (small) on the left (218th)... If you can find a parking spot there -- in the back -- just walk down the street and the last house on the LEFT is the place! Big Green house, lots of big plants, carport.

Behind it is the pool, at the back of the carport, left side of house.

Call me it you have any concerns.

The number there is 604.467.2024... but only call me there THAT DAY...
better thought: call my cell phone, 604.328.3170
